A Meditation on Migration is a poetic moving-image portrait that ponders on departure. A Black woman, a Matriarch, a human recounts the memories and experiences moving from Duncan, Mississippi to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the sixties.

This film was inspired by a large yellow banner with the words “Opportunity Zone” in red text hanging on a dilapidated building. The words Opportunity Zone sparked my curiosity.

What is an Opportunity Zone?
Why is this large sign attached to a dilapidated building without any further context?
Who will benefit from Opportunity Zones?

I then began to think about the word opportunity, and its place in the minds of the millions of Black Americans who migrated North in search of better lives for their families. What did opportunity mean for them? What does opportunity mean for Black Americans today?
